Week 2 – Dallas @ Tennessee: It’s the little things

Chinese philosopher/poet Lao-tzu is credited with the axiom “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

At the moment, little steps are all that I’m looking for when it comes to the ‘Boys, so you can imagine my satisfaction when I saw this on Monday morning:

No, not that the Mets lost – that’s what I call “September” but that A): The Cowboys won and B): Even SportsCenter felt it worth pointing out that Tony Romo did not get picked off.

Little steps.

We completed 26 first downs, while allowing only 13 to the Titans.

Little steps.

Our running backs rushed for 220 yards to the Titans 82.

Little steps.

We converted 56 percent of our third downs (9/16), while keeping Tennessee to 20 percent (2/10)

Little steps.

We also won the possession count handsomely.

Little steps.

Henry Melton looks like his recovery from knee and groin injuries is progressing nicely. If only he can develop into the pass-rusher the Dallas D so desperately needs. Ditto Rolando McClain; finally healthy!

Little steps.

Although he’s preaching to the choir, ESPN’s Tim McMahon notes that the ‘Boys have drastically reduced the amount of yardage the’ve given up in recent seasons. Yes, the season is only two weeks old, but…

Little steps.

Tennessee TE Delanie Walker caught 10 passes for 142 yards. Dallas collectively passed for a total 148. A tight end (Delanie Walker, granted) was allowed the length of the field and then some by this defence.

*sigh, grit teeth* Little steps.

With Sam Bradford still sidelined for St Louis, the Cowboys will head to Edward Jones Dome next Monday morning confident they can make it a 2-1 season. With no disrespect intended at the Rams, the upcoming clash with the “Who Dat’s” in two weeks is when we’ll really see if the Dallas D is genuinely on the improve or – like they were against the 49ers in Week 1 – are handed a lesson in how far they have to go before they get the respect they crave.

Little steps. Please.

About Steve Baker

Steve Baker cashed in his horses for choppers and went tear-assing around 'Nam, looking for the shit. He's been known to chopper in t-bones and beer and turn the L-Z into a beach party. Steve's the defending 'Most Pessimistic Dallas Fan' champion and is in the midst of a life-long campaign to one day buy the Cowboys off Jerry Jones and end the madness. He's also chief button-pusher for the Footy Almanac Podcast, so you can blame him.
