Week 6 – Matty Football Challenge

How did the Titans give up a 25-point lead and get beat by the Browns? The Saints needed OT at home to beat the Bucs?? The unbeaten Bengals went to Foxborough and got beaten by 30?

It was a crazy week and one which was quite costly for many bettors. Including me!! A mediocre 6-9 ATS and we are now just four games above .500 for the season.

We couldn’t be this bad 3 weeks in a row. Could we??

Picks in BOLD……Must cover the spread for a WIN..

Colts (-2.5) @ Texans  ESPN FRIDAY 11.25

This was a tricky one for me as I don’t really rate either of these teams. Numbers say go with the Colts. Luck is rolling at the moment, lifting his offense to be the 2nd best in the league and the Texans defense is awful and banged up.

The Texans’ only weapon on offense is Arian Foster who has been a one man wrecking ball the last month and kept them in most games with Ryan Fitzpatrick throwing pick after pick after pick. One thing the Colts do well on defense is stop the rush so don’t expect Foster to have it all his own way.

Interesting Stat: The Colts have won nine Thursday games in a row, seven of them on the road.

Jaguars (+6.5) @ Titans

Main bit of news here is that Titans QB Jake Locker didn’t practice Wednesday and will be a game time decision. If he doesn’t play this has to be the week the Jags cover. It has to.

Ravens @ Buccaneers (+3.5)

I expect the Bucs to go to town against a suspect Ravens pass defense. Mike Glennon has been impressive since taking over from Josh McCown two weeks ago, winning in Pittsburgh and then giving the Saints a scare at a place they never win. (Giving away 15 penalties didn’t help)

Missing starting corner Asa Jackson won’t help the Ravens, who were poor last week in Indy. Back to back road games as well and I’m getting keener by the second; the Bucs get an upset win at home.

Broncos @ Jets (+9.5)

Am I crazy here but I like the Jets. I’m not saying they win but I think they get within 10 at home.

This line opened -7 and has gone to -10 in places. Everyone is loving the Broncos to give the Jets a beatdown this week but I think coming back home after the debacle in San Diego last week they get a chance to prove themselves against a Super Bowl contender which has no running game, an overrated secondary and a QB who has had nine months worth of nightmares since the disastrous Super Bowl loss to the Seahawks in this very stadium. Here is the negative…

The Jets didn’t get the ball past halfway until the 4th quarter last week. Geno looks terrible. Vick looks done. And Rex, well I just don’t know about Rex. Is he to blame for the whole mess or is the GM who spent more than $90 million on average players in the off-season the one to blame? Whoever’s to blame for this, it’s going to be a long time before the Jets start winning consistently.

But they get a chance for some respect here. Jets to lose by 7 but cover the line

Interesting Stat: The Jets lead the league in Sacks (17). Look out Peyton.

Lions @ Vikings (+2.5)

Patriots @ Bills (+3) 7Mate Monday 4.00

Panthers @ Bengals (-7)

Interesting Stat: The Bengals are 11-0 ATS in their last 11 home games.

Steelers (+2) @ Browns

Packers @ Dolphins (+3.5)

Interesting Stat: The Dolphins are 10-3 against the Pack last 13 games..

Chargers @ Raiders (+7.5)

I’ve been with the Chargers all season but I think they’re due for a stinker. The Raiders have a new head coach and for some strange reason players seem to lift when a new coach arrives for his first game. Especially at home. Everyone is playing for positions. The Chargers O-Line is also banged up (starting a rookie at center is fraught with danger) and they’re missing their two starting RB’S. They’ve even had to bring Ronnie Brown back. (Ronnie Brown is still in the league??Really??)

And there’s no real downside to this pick. If the Raiders get beaten they were expected too and everyone moves on. If they win you look like Nostradamus and everyone carries you around on their shoulders. I like it!! Raiders by 3.

Bears (+3) @ Falcons

Cowboys @ Seahawks (-8.5)

If the Cowboys go into Seattle and win, this league will forfeit the right to be taken seriously.

Redskins (+3.5) @ Cardinals-7Mate Monday 7.25

No Calais Campbell on defense means no Arizona Cardinals. I think after sneaking away with a couple of wins early in the season the Cards hit the wall and start to lose a few. I liked the Skins 2nd half last week against Seattle and they have a good record against Arizona. With the Cardinals missing important players on defense I like Kirk Cousins to light it up. Redskins by 10

Interesting Stat: Washington has won eight in a row against Arizona

Giants @ Eagles (+2.5) ESPN Monday 11.30

Both these teams annoy me but the Giants can’t win four in a row. Although the Eagles have had an enormous amount of luck winning games this season, I think Nick Foles rips apart this average Giants pass defense. Rashad Jennings missing at RB is also a blow for the Giants. Eagles by 7

49ers @ Rams (+3.5) ESPN Tuesday 11.25

It might be ok to publicly support the coach and come out and get a couple of, if not pretty, but hard-fought wins at home. Different story on the road. And indoors. The Niners have traditionally done well against the Rams but I like St. Louis to cause an upset here. I thought they were the better team last week in Philly and before that led the Cowboys by 20 and lost by 3. They defend the pass better than anyone but can’t defend the run to save themselves so I suggest Fantasy players start Frank Gore this week.

Interesting Stat: 49ers are 13-4-1 against the Rams last 10 seasons

Lock of the Week: (1-2) Seahawks (-8.5) vs Cowboys

Last Week: 6-9

Season: 40-36
